Manuscript order signed by British Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson during the War of the Second Coalition (1798-1802).
During the summer of 1801, the Royal Navy was fearful Napoleon might launch an assault on mainland England. Admiral Horatio Nelson, fresh from his victory at the Battle of Copenhagen in April, was charged with command of the squadron stationed in the Channel to thwart potential attack.
The HMS Amazon sailed under Nelson five months earlier at The Battle of Copenhagen and was badly damaged as a result, with the ship's Captain Edward Riou being killed under heavy fire. The 38-gun frigate endured and saw action in the Mediterranean for the next three years, eventually sailing again with Nelson at the decisive Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
